Celebrating 75 years of Blue Note Records

LONDON Southbank Centre / Royal Festival Hall

Seventy five years of jazz history are encapsulated in the story of Blue Note Records.

The Festival celebrates a modern music landmark by bringing together a clutch of artists who are living proof of the label’s continuing quest for fresh and vital new sounds – the future of jazz lies in very safe hands.

Jason Moran and Robert Glasper’s deceptively playful piano duets dig deep into the music’s tradition, evoking Blue Note’s very first recording in 1939, the ebullient boogie woogie team of Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis – but these are two musicians who remain resolutely of today, taking jazz into dramatic new territory and meeting a world of hip-hop and global sound.

The second half is graced by a band of kindred spirits.  Glasper is joined by a stellar line-up drawn from the current Blue Note roster, with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Kendrick Scott, guitarist Lionel Loueke and saxophonist Marcus Strickland, in a sextet of mouth-watering potential - all of them leaders in their own right, all of them at the forefront of today’s jazz generation.
